Detention of 'Nihat M' Highlights Environmental and Safety Violations

Jul 13, 2017 21:41

The 'Nihat M' faced official detention following a port state control inspection upon its arrival in Brake on July 11, 2017. During the inspection, conducted by Water Police Brake, it was discovered that the vessel lacked a compliant procedure for converting high-sulfur marine fuel to low-sulfur marine fuel, a requirement in Sulfur Emission Control Areas (SCA) like the North Sea. Alarmingly, it was also revealed that sewage water was discharged within German territorial waters during the ship’s journey from Malaysia to Brake. A joint investigation with BG Transport officials uncovered that the ship's sewage treatment facility was out of service due to corrosion. Without an adequate holding tank for sewage, untreated waste was pumped directly into the sea. Consequently, Brake police have initiated administrative proceedings against the responsible ship officers. Furthermore, inspectors identified approximately 1m³ of waste improperly disposed of on board, prompting the port authority to mandate its disposal. An extended inspection by BG Verkehr staff uncovered additional deficiencies, leading to an outright ban on the ship until these issues are rectified. Concerns related to hygienic compliance on board have also been communicated to the medical port service, underscoring the pressing need for adherence to environmental and safety regulations.

Danish Bunker Supplier Detains Bulk Carrier 'Nihat M' Over Unpaid Fuel Bills

Nov 18, 2016 10:01

The bulk carrier 'Nihat M' has been detained in Kandla by the Danish bunker supplier Monjasa due to overdue fuel payments. This action follows an arbitration ruling that mandated the ship's arrest. On November 8, 2016, the Gujarat High Court issued the order after Monjasa initiated legal proceedings against the vessel's owner, Istanbul-based Red Funnel Shipping, and its operator, Iskenderun Gemi Isletmeciligi. Monjasa is seeking to recoup approximately $44,000 for unpaid fuel bills, in addition to around $77,700 instructed by a previous arbitration award from September. The total amount required for the vessel's release stands at about $169,000. This incident marks Monjasa's third ship detention in India since February, highlighting ongoing challenges for the company in recouping outstanding payments.
