In a significant crackdown on drug trafficking, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has successfully convicted 10 Filipino crew members of the cargo vessel 'Nord Bosporus' for their involvement in the illegal importation of 20 kilograms of cocaine into Nigeria. This operation unfolded through the bustling Apapa seaport in Lagos, marking a critical enforcement action against drug smuggling. NDLEA spokesman Femi Babafemi announced the verdict on March 18, detailing that the Federal High Court in Lagos has imposed staggering fines and restitution costs amounting to a total of $6 million along with an additional N1.1 million penalty on the convicted individuals. The incident, which led to the apprehension of the vessel and crew, occurred on November 16, 2025, when authorities intercepted a cocaine shipment that was cleverly concealed aboard the ship, which had arrived from Santos. Following the interception, the NDLEA instituted a four-count charge against the defendants under suit number FHC/L/1232C/25 at the Federal High Court 2 in Lagos. Under the leadership of the NDLEA's Director of Prosecution and Legal Services, Theresa Asuquo, the defendants acknowledged their guilt, opting for a plea bargain agreement. On March 18, Justice Ayokunle Faji delivered a decisive ruling, finding the vessel guilty under Section 25 of the NDLEA Act. As per the judgment, the 'Nord Bosporus' is now mandated to pay a fine of N100,000 and restitution of $5.35 million to the Federal Government. The three principal officers—identified as the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th defendants—each face fines of N100,000 and a restitution charge of $100,000. Meanwhile, the remaining seven crew members are required to pay fines of N100,000 each along with $50,000 in restitution per person, culminating in an extensive financial penalty of $6 million and N1.1 million altogether.

The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) has confirmed that 20 Filipino crew members are currently detained aboard the bulk carrier 'Nord Bosporus' in Lagos, Nigeria. This follows the alarming discovery of approximately 20 kilograms of cocaine hidden within a parcel during a routine port inspection. The Nigerian Drug Enforcement Authority (NDEA) made this significant find on November 16, 2025, when the vessel arrived from Santos, Brazil. Local authorities have acted swiftly, obtaining a court order to detain the ship. While the crew was permitted to communicate with their families on November 21 and 22, their mobile phones were confiscated by law enforcement on November 26 as part of the ongoing investigation. Philippine Ambassador to Abuja, Mersole Mellejor, has assured that there is close collaboration with Nigerian officials regarding the situation. The Philippine Honorary Consul in Lagos, Emmanuel Oloja Akpakwu, has been tasked with maintaining contact with local authorities. In preparation for the questioning of the crew, the shipowners and the local manning agency have engaged with their Protection and Indemnity (P&I) Club lawyers to ensure proper legal representation. At this time, the detained seafarers have not made any statements regarding the seized cocaine. The DMW, alongside the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, is actively reaching out to the families of the detained crew for updates and assistance. Moreover, the DMW is in close communication with the ship’s owners and the crewing agency to guarantee that financial support and other crew benefits continue uninterrupted.
