Investigation Underway After Carbon Monoxide Incident at Napier Port
An investigation is currently underway following a troubling incident at Napier Port on the evening of May 7, 2018, where six port workers were hospitalized due to carbon monoxide poisoning. The incident occurred around 8 PM aboard the log ship Nord Yilan as crews were engaged in their duties. A spokesperson from the fire service reported that a turbo unit failure caused exhaust fumes to engulf the workers in the hold. Fortunately, other port employees acted quickly, managing to extract a digger from the hold before the fire service arrived. After receiving immediate medical attention, four workers were released, while a man in his early 20s and another in his late 30s required further care but were subsequently discharged later in the day.
Six Port Workers Poisoned by Carbon Monoxide on Nord Yilan in Napier Incident
In a concerning incident on April 30, 2018, six stevedores from the ISO company experienced carbon monoxide poisoning on the bulk carrier "Nord Yilan" while it was docked at Napier. Emergency services responded promptly around 8 p.m. after reports emerged that a malfunction in the turbo system of a digger/loader caused a dangerous release of exhaust fumes into the ship's hold. Fortunately, other port workers managed to extract the digger before fire crews arrived, although the equipment reportedly may have briefly caught fire in the process. Following initial medical assessments, four of the affected workers were treated and released. However, two men—a young man in his early 20s and another in his late 30s—required further medical observation and spent the night in the hospital's general ward before being discharged in the early afternoon of May 1. The circumstances surrounding the event remain unclear. At the time, the "Nord Yilan," which is linked to the Emslaw One timber company, was engaged in loading logs when the incident unfolded. Maritime New Zealand has initiated an investigation to ascertain the details of the occurrence.
