Emergency Sea Rescue Operation Near Hooksiel
On October 19, 2024, a swift medical evacuation was initiated by the lifeboat 'Bernhard Gruben' from the Hooksiel station of the Deutsche Gesellschaft zur Rettung Schiffbrüchiger (DGzRs), alongside the 'Wolfgang Paul Lorenz' from Horumersiel. The mission was prompted by the urgent need to transport a crew member who had collapsed onboard the dredger 'Nordsee', located approximately five nautical miles from the Hooksiel port. The 'Bernhard Gruben' was the first to respond, swiftly heading towards the compromised vessel. Fortunately, the sailor had regained consciousness, but after consulting with an emergency paramedic stationed at the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), it was determined that immediate medical intervention was essential. Subsequently, the 'Wolfgang Paul Lorenz' set off with a maritime emergency doctor from the Horumersiel station on board. Upon reaching the 'Nordsee', two sea rescuers quickly went aboard to provide initial medical assistance. Shortly thereafter, the emergency doctor from the 'Wolfgang Paul Lorenz' boarded the 'Bernhard Gruben' to further support the rescue effort. The medical professional was able to stabilize the patient sufficiently for transportation. Given the challenging height of the superstructure on the dredger, a basket stretcher was lowered onto the lifeboat's foredeck using the dredger's crane. Under the attentive care of the emergency doctor, the patient was then safely transported back to Hooksiel, where he was handed over to an ambulance for further medical treatment.
