EU Intensifies Sanctions: 52 Ships Added to List, Including 'Minazimu'
On December 16, 2024, during a pivotal Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the European Union unveiled its latest round of sanctions, which now includes the 'Minazimu' among 52 newly sanctioned vessels. These ships have been identified as critical players in supporting Russia’s ongoing military operations. The targeted vessels primarily engage in evading the oil price cap set by Western nations, facilitating arms deliveries, and transporting stolen agricultural goods. With this new sanctions package, the total number of vessels under EU sanctions has reached 79. Most of these ships are involved in the transport of Russian oil and military supplies, further complicating international relations. In addition to maritime assets, the sanctions also encompass 54 individuals and 30 entities believed to be aiding Russia’s military initiatives. Notably, the list includes specific individuals and organizations from China and North Korea, suspected of providing dual-use materials that bolster Russia’s combat capabilities. Among those affected are two high-ranking North Korean officials and seven entities from China. The overarching goal of these sanctions is clear: to raise operational costs for Russia, restricting their access to EU ports and maritime services, thereby weakening their war efforts.
Sophie Schulte Faces Anchor Foul and Subsequent Recovery Efforts
On January 26, 2020, the tanker 'Sophie Schulte', while navigating its journey from Murmansk to Fawley, encountered a significant issue at Nab Anchorage 9 in the Eastern Solent. Both the port and starboard side anchors became fouled at coordinates 50° 35' 40.9" N, 001° 02' 58.9" W. The crew successfully released the anchors at 12:55 AM and 7:25 AM, respectively. Following this incident, the vessel received assistance from tugs 'Lomax' and 'Apex', which escorted the 'Sophie Schulte' safely into Fawley. Surface buoys were deployed to indicate the location of the lost anchors for easy identification. The Southampton Marine Office was notified and subsequently inspected the vessel. To facilitate the retrieval of the anchors, the anchor handling tug supply vessel (AHTS) 'Kingdom of Fife' was assigned the task. However, an initial recovery attempt on January 28 was thwarted by adverse weather conditions, prompting a wait for a more favorable weather window. Consequently, the Coastguard issued a Local Navigation warning BX to inform mariners of the situation. The 'Sophie Schulte' planned to move from Fawley to Southampton Berth on the evening of January 29, pending approval from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA). On that day, the 'Kingdom of Fife' arrived at Nab Anchorage-9 at 11:40 AM to attempt the retrieval once more. Despite continued poor weather, the vessel remained in contact with Southampton VTS, ensuring safety throughout the operations. The anticipated movement for the 'Sophie Schulte' was scheduled for 6:30 PM into Southampton Berth-101.
Tanker Comes to Aid of Disabled Yacht in Atlantic Rescue
On November 24, 2019, the tanker 'Sophie Schulte' teamed up with the US Coast Guard to provide critical assistance to the stranded 68-foot sailing vessel 'Distant Drummer', which was situated over 420 miles east of Cape Canaveral. The emergency alert came in at approximately 2:30 p.m. when the 7th District Command Center received a distress call from the yacht carrying six individuals. In response, the Coast Guard issued an enhanced group calling (EGC) message and coordinated with the AMVER vessel 'Sophie Schulte', which was on its voyage from Corpus Christi to Southampton, UK. They also called upon the Coast Guard Cutter 'Bernard C. Webber (WPC-1101)', a 154-foot fast response cutter stationed in Miami, and the USS 'Winston S. Churchill (DDG-81)', a 510-foot Arleigh Burke-class destroyer based in Norfolk, Virginia. The 'Sophie Schulte' was the first to reach the scene and initiated efforts to repair the disabled sailing vessel's engine. The tanker remained on duty until 12:30 p.m. on November 25, when the 'Bernard C. Webber' arrived and took the 'Distant Drummer' in tow. Subsequently, the yacht was successfully transported to Fort Pierce, where a 45-foot boat from Station Fort Pierce continued the tow to a secure berth.
