Tanker Incident Near Hansweert: Obsidian Runs Aground Before Resuming Voyage
On September 27, 2018, at precisely 12:20 a.m., the tanker 'Obsidian' encountered a grounding incident while navigating upstream on the Scheldt River, en route from New Orleans to Antwerp. The vessel became temporarily lodged off the coast of Hansweert. Fortunately, the 'Obsidian' was able to dislodge itself within approximately one hour, proceeding to anchor at the Schaar van Ouden Doel, located just across the Belgian border, for a thorough inspection. After a careful examination revealed no damage, the tanker was given the green light to continue its journey. It then made its way to the Canal Dock in Antwerp, docking at the Vesta Terminal Antwerp at about 7 a.m. Initial investigations suggest that while the ship may not have made contact with the riverbed, it experienced a phenomenon known as shoaling, which kept it stationary for nearly an hour.
