EU Expands Sanctions Against Vessels Supporting Russian Aggression

Dec 17, 2024 13:16

On December 16, 2024, the European Union took significant action during the Foreign Affairs Council meeting by introducing a new sanctions package that includes 52 additional vessels, such as the 'Tyagaraja'. These vessels have been identified as contributors to Russia's military operations. Many of the listed ships are involved in undermining the oil price cap established by Western nations, facilitating arms deliveries, and transporting stolen grain. With this latest round of sanctions, the EU has now imposed restrictions on a total of 79 vessels. The focus remains on those engaged in transporting Russian oil and military supplies to bolster the Russian war effort. In addition to the vessels, the package also affects 54 individuals and 30 entities linked to supporting Russia's military initiatives, including suppliers from China and North Korea providing dual-use materials. Notably, the sanctions specifically target two senior officials from North Korea along with seven individuals and companies from China. This comprehensive sanctions approach aims to raise operational costs for Russia by preventing access to EU ports and restricting maritime service availability.
