Panama-Registered Tanker 'Ocean Thunder' Granted Safe Passage Through Strait of Hormuz

Apr 07, 2026 12:59

In a significant maritime development, the 'Ocean Thunder', a tanker registered under the Panama flag, has successfully navigated through the strategic Strait of Hormuz on April 5, 2026. The vessel, which was traversing the Gulf of Oman, was on its way from Ras Tanura to Dubai, carrying a substantial cargo of one million barrels of crude oil sourced from Iraq. Interestingly, Iranian authorities labeled the ship as being flagged in Portugal. However, it has previously flown various flags, including those of Greece, Liberia, Malta, Norway, and the Marshall Islands, before finally being registered in Panama. This incident underscores the complex nature of maritime registration and the geopolitical sensitivities surrounding shipping routes in the region.
