Crowley Receives First of Four New LNG-Ready Jones Act Tankers from Aker Philadelphia Shipyard
Crowley Maritime Corp. proudly announced the delivery of the Ohio, marking the inaugural vessel of four new Jones Act-compliant product tankers received from Aker Philadelphia Shipyard, Inc. (APSI), a fully-owned subsidiary of Aker Philadelphia Shipyard ASA. This significant event not only elevates Crowley’s fleet but also sets a precedent in the maritime industry as it is the first product tanker designed with future liquefied natural gas (LNG) propulsion capabilities in mind. The subsequent three product tankers are still under construction at APSI and are slated for delivery by 2016. Rob Grune, Crowley's senior vice president and general manager of petroleum and chemical transportation, expressed enthusiasm about this technological advancement, stating, "We are thrilled to provide our clients with state-of-the-art technology inherent in these new tankers. They embody operational excellence and superior safety while also offering the potential for environmentally friendly LNG power in the future." He added that the integration of these new Jones Act tankers into their fleet will enhance the reliability and diversity of their equipment for transporting petroleum and chemical products safely. Steinar Nerbovik, president and CEO of APSI, echoed this sentiment, noting, "We take pride in continuing our strong relationship with Crowley and delivering yet another quality vessel. This delivery reinforces our commitment to shipbuilding right here in Philadelphia." Each of the new product tankers boasts a capacity of 50,000 dwt and is built on a proven design from Hyundai Mipo Dockyards (HMD), featuring enhanced fuel efficiency, versatile cargo hold capabilities, and adherence to the latest regulatory standards. The Ohio measures 600 feet in length and is adept at transporting both crude oil and refined petroleum products. Additionally, Jensen Maritime, Crowley’s Seattle-based subsidiary specializing in naval architecture and marine engineering, is actively overseeing the construction process. With an office and staff stationed at the Philadelphia shipyard, Jensen Maritime is focused on fostering strong collaborations with shipyard personnel to ensure a smooth construction and delivery timeline.
