Cargo Ships Navigate Troubled Waters: Incident Near Istanbul

Feb 26, 2019 10:34

In a maritime incident that unfolded on February 25, 2019, the cargo vessel m/v 'Navaho' faced a challenging situation while attempting to anchor at Zeytinburu anchorage B, situated near Istanbul in the Marmara Sea. At approximately 10 p.m., a significant mishap occurred when 'Navaho' drew too close to the vessel 'Oxsana V', leading to its anchor chain becoming entangled with 'Oxsana V's propeller, which ultimately sustained a crack. To swiftly address the situation, the General Directorate of Coastal Safety organized rescue efforts, deploying the lifeboat 'Kıyı Emniyeti 3', which was subsequently assisted by 'Kıyı Emniyeti 4', along with the tugs 'Kurtarma 7' and 'Mehmetçik'. By the morning of February 26, a preliminary assessment indicated that the vessels were still positioned at a distance of 40 meters apart at coordinates 40° 57.94' N, 028° 54.23' E. Notably, 'Oxsana V' had departed from Altinova at 5 p.m. and successfully dropped anchor at 8:40 p.m. For more details and photographs of the incident, refer to the Turkish report available at Deniz Haber: http://www.denizhaber.com/kazalar/zeytinburnu-aciklari-b-demir-bolgesinde-gemiler-carpisti-h77485.html.
