Tanker 'Olavo Bilac' Collides with Quayside and Brazilian Navy Patrol Boats in Santos
In a dramatic incident on March 12, 2025, at 11:20 PM, the tanker 'Olavo Bilac,' loaded with 50,000 tons of fuel oil, lost rudder control while navigating at the port of Santos, near São Paulo. The vessel was departing the port en route to Angra dos Reis when it unexpectedly veered off course. Initially colliding with the quayside, the tanker then struck three docked Brazilian Navy patrol boats: 'Guarajá P-44' and 'Guaporé P-45' of the Grajaú class, along with 'Maracanã P-72' of the Macaé class. This mishap occurred as the tanker swung to the starboard side and scraped along the pier, ultimately pushing one patrol boat into the others. Fortunately, only one Navy officer sustained minor injuries and has since been released from the hospital. Following the incident, tugboats assisted in guiding the 'Olavo Bilac' back to the Alemoa 1 pier. A thorough inspection conducted by the Port Authority on March 13 revealed significant scrapes and dents on the port side of the tanker, particularly above the waterline; however, there were no signs of leaks or pollution in the waters. The pier, under the jurisdiction of the Brazilian Navy, has been cordoned off as officials conduct a damage assessment. The companies involved are awaiting clearance from the Navy to access the site. Following the collision, the tanker was detained, but the port of Santos continued its operations uninterrupted.
