Oman Drydock Company Marks Milestone with 300th Drydocking and Major Conversion

Jan 25, 2015 13:06

Oman Drydock Company (ODC) has announced a significant milestone in its operations, completing its 300th drydocking alongside its first major conversion project. This achievement signals ODC's ambition to become a frontrunner in the global shipbuilding industry, which has been bolstered by its cutting-edge facility in Duqm, Oman, since its opening in 2011. During a celebratory event at the shipyard, ODC confirmed the successful transformation of the Greek-owned crude oil tanker, Olympic Luck, from an Oil Bulk Ore carrier into a Very Large Crude Carrier. Springfield Shipping Company, the vessel's owner, was present to commemorate this achievement. According to ODC's chairman, Dr. Abdulmalik Bin Abdullah Al Hinai, the company is rapidly establishing a prominent reputation for its ship repair and conversion capabilities. "We take great pride in announcing the completion of the Olympic Luck project, which showcases our world-class infrastructure, facilities, and skilled workforce," stated Dr. Al Hinai. The Olympic Luck, measuring nearly 314 meters and weighing over 319,000 tonnes, underwent extensive modifications. The project engaged over 1,000 workers who executed approximately 3,000 tonnes of steelwork within 80 days. ODC Chief Executive Yong Duk Park highlighted the vital role of their strategic partnership with the renowned Korean shipbuilding giant DSME, stating that their expertise is unparalleled in the region. "By removing bulkhead covers and installing new swash bulkheads, we enhanced the vessel's functionality for better loading efficiency," Park explained. "Our collaboration with DSME allowed us to employ precise engineering and design innovation in our processes. For this conversion, we fabricated nearly 40 large blocks, weighing between 50 and 80 tonnes, which helped streamline construction and reduce costs." With these accomplishments, Oman Drydock Company is poised to continue its growth in the international maritime sector.
