Both the main and auxiliary engines aboard Olympus are slated to receive catalytic converters, with the additional benefit of the auxiliary engine's converter working in harmony with an exhaust gas boiler to lessen operating hours and cut fuel consumption related to the existing boilers. Furthermore, this upgrade will lead to a notable decrease in noise levels. According to Jonas Backman, Managing Director of Sirius Shipping, the initiative will enable Olympus to emit less than 2 grams of NOx per kilowatt-hour. The total investment for this innovative retrofit is approximately one million dollars. As it stands, both Preem and Sirius assert that Olympus is set to become the first tanker globally to achieve over a 90 percent reduction in NOx emissions through retrofitting.
