IRINI Conducts Inspection of Sanctioned Tanker Oneiroi in Mediterranean Operations

Jun 10, 2026 10:41

On June 1, 2026, the European naval and air force mission IRINI executed a crucial flag inspection of the oil tanker 'Oneiroi', known to be under EU sanctions. This operation was part of IRINI's overarching mission of surveillance and control on the high seas. The inspection adhered to Article 110 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), which stipulates the right of visitation on the high seas, applicable under specific circumstances such as suspicions regarding a vessel’s flag registration or nationality. Just prior, on May 11, IRINI had similarly inspected the 'Nelsa' (IMO: 9408205). Both inspections were grounded in Article 110 of the Law of the Sea Convention and aligned with the European Union's strategic measures against the Russian shadow fleet. Following this, on June 7, IRINI scrutinized yet another EU-sanctioned vessel, the tanker 'Sandhya' (IMO: 9352195), in the Mediterranean. This vessel is listed on the European Union’s sanctions register due to allegations of transporting or exporting crude oil or petroleum products from Russia, utilizing irregular and high-risk shipping practices. The sanctions went into effect on July 20, 2025, as part of a coordinated European response to the shadow fleet, which operates to bypass G7 and EU-imposed embargoes and price caps. The inspection of 'Oneiroi' marked another significant step in IRINI's ongoing mission, which has been granted an extension until March 31, 2027.
