On March 14, 2018, the exploration vessel 'Ocean Investigator' docked at the Limassol East Container Terminal amidst ongoing political tensions with Turkey regarding gas exploration rights in the Mediterranean Sea. The ship is set to engage in hydrocarbon exploration within Block 10 of Cyprus' exclusive economic zone (EEZ). Following closely behind, the 'Med Surveyor' is expected to arrive on March 15. ExxonMobil has outlined plans to conduct exploration activities, paving the way for possible drilling operations in the latter half of the year. However, Turkey has previously hampered similar initiatives by Italian energy company Eni, asserting that Turkish Cypriots in the unrecognized enclave in northern Cyprus should have immediate access to revenue from these resources. On March 14, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan emphasized that any gas exploration off the coast of Cyprus should not proceed without the participation of the Turkish Cypriot community. Currently, 'Ocean Investigator' is slated to remain in Limassol until March 24 to facilitate the loading of necessary equipment, though early departure is a possibility contingent on the progress of preparations.
