The Oraholm: Crew Feedback and Vessel Data

On April 29, 2016, the tanker "Oraholm" encountered unexpected engine issues while navigating the Kiel Canal. During its eastbound passage towards Ruisbroek from Söby, the vessel suffered a significant malfunction as it approached the Holtenau locks around 4:15 p.m. A loud bang signaled trouble, followed by billowing clouds of smoke pouring from the ship's smokestack. In response, local police quickly boarded the ship to assess the situation. To assist, the tugs "Kiel" and "Kitzeberg" were dispatched, successfully pulling the stricken tanker backward approximately an hour later. Subsequently, the "Oraholm" was secured at the North Jetty of the port of Kiel by 6 p.m. Crew members worked diligently to repair the damaged injection system and turbocharger, completing the repairs by 2:40 a.m. the following morning. With the issues resolved, the vessel resumed its journey, successfully traversing the canal and entering the North Sea by 10 a.m., albeit a day later than scheduled. On October 25, 2010, the cargo vessel 'Oraholm' docked at Humber Quay of Cux-Port in Cuxhaven. While navigating through the challenging conditions of the North Sea on its voyage from Gdansk to Rouen, expected to arrive on October 27, the ship encountered significant stormy weather, leading to the loss of both its anchors and anchor chains.
