City of Rome Vehicle Carrier Crashes Into Lock Gate in IJmuiden
On the morning of April 23, 2016, the vehicle carrier 'City of Rome' encountered a mishap as it approached the maritime locks in IJmuiden. While en route from Amsterdam towards the open sea, the vessel failed to stop in time and collided with the seaward gate of the Northern Lock, creating a breach approximately 3x3 meters in size. The impact from the bulbous bow of the 'City of Rome' resulted in damage to a ballast tank, causing water to flow into the lock. As the water level inside the lock reached parity with the sea level, measures had to be taken to halt the inflow. A diver was dispatched for an inspection of both the lock gate and the ship's bow. Upon examination, it was revealed that the bulbous bow sustained a noticeable dent, with the primary damage affecting the flooded ballast tank. Fortunately, the diver reported no protruding components which could pose further complications. To restore balance, the water from the full ballast tank was pumped out, after which the lock gate was tested for functionality. Following successful assessments, normal traffic through the lock resumed. Afterward, the 'City of Rome' exited the lock in reverse and proceeded to berth in the Sea Canal A at Velsen North at 3 p.m. The vessel departed the berth on April 25 at 1 a.m., setting its course for Rotterdam. It successfully navigated to Wilton Port at the Keppel Verolme Shipyard, where it arrived at 10:15 a.m. for necessary repairs to its damaged bulbous bow. In order to carry out these repairs, the lock gate will likely be removed and drydocked during the upcoming routine maintenance. Notably, at low tide, the top of the hole in the gate was just visible above the waterline.
