Geest Line Supports Relief Efforts in Storm-Ravaged Dominica

Sep 09, 2015 09:59

The UK-based maritime cargo leader, Geest Line, is taking significant action to aid the relief efforts following the catastrophic impact of Tropical Storm Erika on the island of Dominica. On August 27, 2015, this devastating storm unleashed torrential rains, leading to severe flooding and triggering an estimated 200 landslides, resulting in 20 fatalities and 50 individuals reported missing. This natural disaster has been marked as the deadliest in Dominica since 1979, wreaking havoc on road infrastructure and communication systems across the island. Geest Line, renowned for its long-standing connection between the UK and the Caribbean, primarily transporting bananas to the east and essential supplies westward for over six decades, has pledged to provide humanitarian aid at no cost. This includes critical items such as plastic barrels, blankets, and water, which will be shipped directly to Dominica to assist those in need. Peter Dixon, Managing Director at Geest, expressed his sorrow over the calamity affecting Dominica. “It has been heart-breaking to see the death and destruction on Dominica, an island with whose people we work very closely on a daily basis. After discussions with the Dominica High Commission in London, we pledged to offer any help we could with relief efforts and rebuilding,” he stated. The relief operation is set in motion with the Klipper Stream vessel scheduled to depart from the UK on September 8, followed by the Agulhas Stream on September 21. Additionally, MMD (Shipping Services) of Portsmouth is joining the cause by waiving its shipping fees to support this vital humanitarian effort. The collaboration highlights the community spirit and solidarity in the face of disaster as the Caribbean island embarks on its journey towards recovery.
