The Hartzi Set for Auction: A Maritime Saga Unfolds
On January 18, 2012, the maritime community will witness the auction of the 'Hartzi,' currently detained in Skagen, at the Hjørring courthouse. This vessel, part of a group owned by a company registered in the Marshall Islands, is among 12 ships that the bank consortium behind the Shipowners' Group has decided to sell following the group's dissolution. The 'Hartzi' gained notoriety in 2011 when it remained anchored off the Skagen coast for several months, while its 19 crew members faced a dire situation of unpaid wages and a lack of basic necessities. The plight of the sailors attracted the attention of the Handelsflådens Velfærdsråd and the International Transport Workers Federation, who stepped in to provide much-needed support during this challenging time.
Hartz Crew Finally Receives Back Wages After Prolonged Stranding
After enduring a harrowing period of being stranded in Skagen since May 2011, the 19-member crew of the tanker 'Hartzi' has finally received their overdue wages totaling $1.8 million. The welcome news follows the intervention of a Norwegian shipping company that redeemed the vessel. The International Transport Workers Federation expressed relief that the crew, comprising 11 Russian, four Ukrainian, and four Filipino sailors, has now been compensated for their long wait while docked off the Skagen coast. The ship had been detained due to the owner's failure to settle an outstanding bill with a bunker company. During their time stranded, the Handelsflådens Velfærdsråd ensured that the sailors received essential medical care, food, and water. Meanwhile, the Transport Workers' Union actively advocated for the payment of their wages. As a result, on August 24, 2011, the sailors were issued tickets to begin their journey home on August 25.
