EU Expands Sanctions List with 52 New Vessels Including Pathfinder

Dec 17, 2024 13:18

On December 16, 2024, at the Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the European Union unveiled its latest sanctions package, which includes 52 additional vessels, notably the 'Pathfinder'. This move is part of the EU's ongoing efforts to counteract Russia's military operations amid the ongoing conflict. The sanctioned vessels have been implicated in activities such as breaching the oil price cap set by Western nations, facilitating arms shipments, and transporting grain obtained through dubious means. This latest round of sanctions has now increased the total number of vessels blacklisted by the EU to 79, with a significant portion linked to the transportation of Russian oil and military supplies. In addition to the vessels, the sanctions package also encompasses 54 individuals and 30 entities believed to be contributing to Russia’s war efforts. This group includes several entities and individuals based in China and North Korea, accused of providing dual-use materials essential for Russian military activities. Among those targeted are two senior officials from North Korea and seven individuals and companies from China. The overarching goal of this sanctions initiative is to elevate the operational costs for Russia, barring access to EU ports and restricting crucial maritime services.
