Final Remains of Crew Retrieved from Sunken Hai Thanh 26 Following Collision
During a search operation on April 1, rescuers successfully recovered the final three bodies of the crew entangled in the wreckage of the 'Hai Thanh 26'. The vessel tragically sank after colliding with the 'Petrolimex 14' earlier this week, resulting in the loss of 11 crew members. The recovery efforts commenced around 9 a.m., where divers discovered two bodies within the engine room of the sunken ship. An investigation is set to follow once the wreck of the 'Hai Thanh 26' is raised. This maritime disaster occurred approximately 44 nautical miles east of Vung Tau City in the early hours of March 28 while the cargo ship was en route to deliver clinker to Can Tho in the Mekong Delta region. Out of the 11 crew members, nine tragically lost their lives; seven bodies were located inside the vessel while two additional bodies were found adrift in the waters. Fortunately, the crew of the 'Petrolimex 14' managed to locate a life raft carrying two survivors from the sunken vessel, including the captain, at 7 a.m. on that fateful day. The 'Hai Thanh 26', owned by Phuong Thinh shipping company based in the northern province of Thai Binh, was reported to be situated at a depth of 30 meters, suffering significant damage amidships.
Rescue Efforts Underway After Hải Thành 26 Tanker Sinking Incident
In the early hours of March 28, 2017, the Vietnamese cargo vessel m/v "Hải Thành 26" (IMO: 9611096), weighing 1,599 GT, tragically sank in the Vung Tau Sea, approximately 44 nautical miles east of Vung Tau City in Vietnam's Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province. Following the distressing collision, the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) swiftly dispatched the nearby tanker "Petrolimex 14" to the scene, located about five nautical miles from the wreckage. Concurrently, the MRCC alerted two other support vessels, "SAR 413" and "SAR 272," to assist in the search and rescue operation. The crew of "Petrolimex 14" successfully located a breeches-buoy with two surviving crew members from the "Hải Thành 26" aboard. Upon rescue, one survivor reported that additional crew members had floated away on another breeches-buoy. Responding promptly, "Petrolimex 14" along with the two support vessels continued their search efforts, ultimately discovering another breeches-buoy around 8:10 a.m.; however, it was unfortunately found empty. The ill-fated "Hải Thành 26" was en route from Hai Phong City in the north to Can Tho City in the south, carrying a crew of 11 men and clinker, when it collided with an unidentified ship and sank at midnight.
