Tanker Disconnects from Pipeline, Causes Oil Spill in Gulf of Thailand

Jun 08, 2025 12:56

In the early hours of June 5, 2025, at precisely 12:54 a.m., a significant incident occurred involving the oil tanker 'Phoenix Jamnagar' in the Gulf of Thailand. The vessel disconnected from an offshore pipeline near the Sri Racha District, southeast of Bangkok, at coordinates 13°04.225′ N, 100°46.815′ E. The disconnection was triggered by unexpected severe weather characterized by high waves and sudden gusts of wind. In response to the spill, Thai Oil company quickly mobilized resources to halt the oil transfer, effectively employing a fail-safe breakaway coupling designed to safeguard both the tanker and the pipeline. However, this mechanism disengaged, resulting in an oil spill that took approximately 30 minutes to contain. The National Maritime Interests Protection Center (ThaiMecc) estimated that around 20 cubic meters of oil escaped during the incident. As part of the emergency response, oil dispersants, booms, and skimmers were strategically deployed. Efforts to contain the spill included the installation of oil booms extending to 399 and 600 meters; unfortunately, the slick expanded, creating a coverage area of about 10 meters by 10 meters and drifting southward at a speed ranging between 1 to 2 knots. Multiple government agencies teamed up with Thai Oil to manage the situation and mitigate environmental damage. Boats and helicopters equipped with dispersants were actively traversing the affected area, and a skimming vessel was dispatched to assist in cleanup operations. The goal was to complete these skimming efforts by the afternoon of June 6. Fortunately, no immediate damage was reported to the tanker or the pipeline involved in the incident.
