Collision Incident on the Waal River: Avalon Impression and Piz Everest
On the evening of November 3, 2014, a maritime collision occurred on the Waal River near Nijmegen when the empty tank barge "Piz Everest" was struck by the river cruise ship "Avalon Impression" shortly after 10 p.m. The "Avalon Impression," which was en route from Gorinchem and lacking any passengers, collided with the tank barge that had recently moored at the quay after arriving from Ludwigshafen. Following the impact, the cruise ship inadvertently ran into a fairway buoy that subsequently became lodged in its propeller, causing further complications for both vessels. Fortunately, despite the damages sustained by both ships, navigation on the Waal River remained uninterrupted following the incident. Authorities, including local police and Rijkswaterstaat, have initiated an investigation into the event. After undergoing assessments, the "Avalon Impression" resumed its journey from Nijmegen on November 4 at around 10 a.m., while the "Piz Everest," which incurred some damage to its stern, departed for Antwerp earlier that day at 3 a.m. For additional details and visual coverage, a Dutch report featuring photographs and videos is available at [Omroep Gelderland](http://www.omroepgelderland.nl/web/nieuws-1/2074073/botsing-tussen-passagiersschip-en-tanker-op-waal-bij-nijmegen.htm#.VFiVmMmLWxV).

This occurred near the Botlek Bridge on the Old Maas. Fortunately, two boats from the harbor service promptly responded to the emergency. They effectively managed the flooding situation and towed the vessel away from the fairway to ensure safety.
