In a significant development for the U.S. oil market, the first shipment of Alaskan crude to South Korea in more than ten years departed this past weekend, reflecting the ongoing shift in U.S. energy exports. According to shipping data and company insiders, the Suezmax tanker Polar Discovery loaded its cargo at the Valdez terminal in Alaska late last week and is expected to reach Yeosu, South Korea, by next week. This shipment, which comprises 800,000 barrels of Alaskan crude, was confirmed by a representative of GS Caltex Corp, South Korea's second-largest refiner, who stated the delivery is set for October 10. This transaction marks a pivotal moment as it involves the first export of Alaska North Slope (ANS) crude since 2004, a type largely unaffected by the decades-long U.S. export ban. Notably, government data indicates this is the first crude oil delivery from the United States to South Korea since 2000, aside from a recent export of lightly processed condensate from the Gulf. The representative at GS Caltex, a joint venture of GS Holdings and Chevron Corp, mentioned the acquisition was made at competitive rates but did not provide further details.
