EU Expands Sanctions: 'Rigel' Among 52 Vessels Targeted
On December 16, 2024, during a Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the European Union unveiled its latest sanctions package, which includes the addition of 52 vessels, one of which is the 'Rigel'. This significant update brings the total number of vessels subjected to EU sanctions to 79, all identified as contributing to Russia's military operations amid the ongoing conflict. Many of the sanctioned vessels are accused of circumventing the West's oil price cap, facilitating arms shipments, and transporting stolen grain. Complementing these maritime sanctions, the new package also impacts 54 individuals and 30 entities allegedly assisting Russia in its war efforts. Notably, several entities and individuals from China and North Korea are included, with two high-ranking North Korean officials and seven individuals and companies from China specifically targeted for supplying materials that can serve dual military purposes. The overarching aim of these sanctions is to escalate operational costs for Russia by restricting access to EU ports and maritime services.
Primorsky Prospect to Make History as First Large Tanker at Ust-Luga Oil Terminal
The 114,000 dwt tanker, Primorsky Prospect, owned by Sofcomflot, is set to make maritime history by being the inaugural large tanker to dock at the Port of Ust-Luga's export oil terminal on April 15, 2011. This significant event was reported by PortNews, based on insider information from the Port Authority. Ongoing dredging operations are ensuring that Ust-Luga’s berths now reach depths of 16 meters. The development of this vital liquid bulk terminal, financed by Gunvor's subsidiary, JSC Rosneftbunker, comes with a hefty price tag of approximately RUB 26 billion and is currently under construction. Once completed, the terminal is projected to handle an impressive capacity of 30 million tons of petroleum products annually. In line with these ambitious plans, Rosneftbunker anticipates exporting around 10-11 million tons of petroleum products through the terminal within the year 2011. Earlier, on January 31, 2011, the terminal's inaugural operations kicked off with the loading of the first oil cargo onto the SCF Neva, a 47,000 dwt product tanker also owned by Sovcomflot.
