On March 17, 2015, the U.S. Coast Guard, in collaboration with the research vessel crew, embarked on a search operation approximately 1,500 miles southeast of Bermuda for a missing individual in the water. The search was initiated after a 31-year-old male from Papua New Guinea was reported missing from the research vessel "Professor Logachev" at about 6:30 p.m. on March 16. Watch standers at the Coast Guard's 5th District Command Center in Portsmouth received notification of the incident around 8 p.m. that same evening. In response, a C-130 Hercules aircraft crew from Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, launched at approximately 11:40 p.m. The Hercules aircraft made a stop in Barbados for refueling before proceeding to the search area. The Coast Guard established a search pattern for the crew of the Professor Logachev utilizing drift projection models to guide their efforts.
