Sanctioned Russian Tanker 'Komander' Grounds in Suez Canal Amidst Shipping Disruptions

Nov 04, 2025 10:12

On October 28, 2025, at approximately 9:14 a.m. UTC, the 'Komander', a tanker carrying 80,000 tons of oil from Russia to China, experienced an engine failure and drifted off-course, ultimately running aground in the Suez Canal near the 48-kilometre mark, just south of the Al Salam Bridge. This incident caused a significant delay for other vessels traveling through the canal, with around 20 northbound ships halted for two to three hours while waiting for assistance. The 'Komander' was the last ship in a southbound convoy and had been designated as vessel number 19, while the preceding 18 vessels passed through without issue. To address the grounding, the Suez Canal Authority (SCA) deployed five tugboats, which successfully refloated the 'Komander' by 11:15 a.m. UTC. After being towed southward, the tanker dropped anchor approximately nine nautical miles north of Ismailia in Bitter Lake, positioned at coordinates 30° 20' N 032° 23' E, where it remained stationary as of November 4, 2025. Constructed in 2004, the ship has undergone several name and flag changes in recent years. It has been registered under four different names: 'Heracles', 'Krishna 1', 'Prudence', and, since September, 'Komander'. The tanker’s flag history is equally convoluted, showing past registrations in Gabon (2023), Panama (2024), and in 2025 under Guyana—though the Guyanese registration was considered dubious—along with Comoros and finally Russia as of September 2025. During the past three years, the vessel has been operated by Gatik Shipmanagement, a company noted for its Russian shipping operations. Notably, the 'Komander' reportedly did not transmit any AIS data during a four-day period while anchored near Port Said, an area notorious for ship-to-ship transfers of sanctioned Russian oil. While it remains unclear if the vessel participated in any STS transfers during this gap, it did not show any changes in draught afterward. The tanker is documented as being owned by a Hong Kong-based company and managed from Russia. It has faced sanctions from the USA, UK, EU, Switzerland, and Ukraine for its involvement in transporting Russian oil above the price cap set by the G7 nations.

Crew of 'Krishna 1' Detained by Malaysian Authorities Over Immigration Violations

Apr 17, 2025 19:09

A total of 20 crew members aboard the tanker 'Krishna 1' were apprehended by Malaysian officials for allegedly breaching the country's territorial waters without the necessary documentation. This incident occurred on April 11, 2025, after the crew disembarked from the vessel at East OPL Malaysia (EOPL). The detained crew consists of 11 Indian nationals, 8 Filipino nationals, and 1 Indonesian national. Despite the efforts of a shipping agent to assist, the crew were taken into custody by the Malaysian Army and subsequently transferred to district police. They are currently being held under Section 6(1)(c) of Malaysia's Immigration Act due to illegal entry. Local authorities are awaiting a full report from the Immigration Department, which is anticipated by April 17. In response to the situation, the embassies of the respective countries of the detained crew have been informed.

EU Expands Sanctions, Targeting New Vessels and Key Individuals

Dec 17, 2024 13:25

On December 16, 2024, the European Union took significant action in its ongoing response to Russia's military operations by introducing a new sanctions package during the Foreign Affairs Council meeting. This latest round of measures sees 52 additional vessels, including the 'Krishna 1', added to the EU's sanctions list, as they have been identified as instrumental in supporting Russia’s war efforts. These vessels are reportedly engaged in activities such as evading the oil price cap imposed by Western nations, facilitating arms shipments, and transporting grain obtained through theft. With this new package, the total number of vessels currently sanctioned by the EU reaches 79, with a substantial proportion linked to the transport of Russian oil and military equipment. The sanctions also extend to 54 individuals and 30 entities recognized as contributors to the Russian military campaign. This includes individuals and organizations from China and North Korea, identified as suppliers of dual-use materials that bolster Russia's military capabilities. Notable targets include two senior officials from North Korea along with seven individuals and corporate entities from China. The overarching goal of these sanctions is to escalate operational costs for Russia by restricting access to EU ports and diminishing the availability of maritime services essential for their military logistics.
