In a significant development, the Greek shipping minister confirmed on November 17 that the 'Prudent Warrior' tanker has been freed by the Iranian authorities. The release, which took place on November 16, follows five months of determined diplomatic efforts by the Greek government. As of November 17, the tanker is now safely anchored off the coast of Fujairah. This event marks a crucial moment in maritime relations and highlights the effectiveness of diplomatic negotiations in resolving shipping disputes.

On November 9, 2023, the Foreign Ministry of Cyprus confirmed the safe return of the Cypriot captain of the 'Prudent Warrior', one of two tankers taken by Iran in May. Foreign Minister Ioannis Kasoulides has maintained communication with the captain following his release. The 'Prudent Warrior' and the 'Delta Poseidon' were apprehended by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran as a direct response to the United States’ seizure of oil from the tanker 'Lana'. The 'Lana', originally detained by Greek authorities at Karystos on May 25, had sought refuge from inclement weather while sailing under the name 'Pegas' and under the Russian flag. In a significant diplomatic move, Iran granted permission in September to free the crews of both Greek-owned vessels, shortly after Athens confirmed its decision to hand over the confiscated Iranian oil from the 'Pegas' to the U.S. After nearly 100 days at sea as hostages, the 49 crew members, which included 10 Greek sailors and one Cypriot, were finally released. This breakthrough followed a visit from a Greek delegation to Iran, where they were able to negotiate the exchange of the crews.

On June 5, Iran's Ports and Maritime Organization (PMO) provided reassuring news regarding the crew members of the seized tankers, 'Delta Poseidon' and 'Prudent Warrior'. According to reports, all crew members are reported to be in excellent health and have maintained phone communication with their families. The deputy head of maritime affairs from Iran’s Hormozgan Province Ports and Maritime met with the captains of both vessels after receiving numerous inquiries about the welfare of the crew. During this meeting, the captains confirmed that the entire crew was both mentally and physically fit, and they received appropriate treatment from military personnel. There were no grievances raised by the crew members, who have been given SIM cards and mobile phones to contact their loved ones. The PMO representative also provided crucial safety and pollution prevention guidance to the captains, noting the importance of adhering to regulations in this sensitive maritime area. In response to the captains' requests, actions were agreed upon to ensure compliance with international standards and to facilitate the recording of the ships’ operations. The captains were also encouraged to reach out to relevant authorities should any new situations arise. Furthermore, it was clarified that in accordance with international protocols, there would be no restrictions on conducting daily operations and preparations onboard the tankers, signaling a return to normalcy. Consular meetings are now approved for the crews of both vessels, further enhancing their support during this time.
