Search Underway for Missing Master of Bulk Carrier 'Rising Wind' Near Chuuk
On February 11, 2020, a comprehensive search operation was initiated by the US Coast Guard, in conjunction with the Air Force and regional partners, for a 47-year-old mariner who went missing from the bulk carrier 'Rising Wind', located 174 miles northwest of Chuuk. The alarm was raised at around 5:45 p.m. when the JRSC Guam watchstanders received an urgent communication from the Rescue Coordination Center Australia, which revealed that the first mate of the vessel had reported the captain's mysterious disappearance. The last sighting of the master occurred in his cabin, where he was feeling unwell, dressed in a dark-blue winter jacket, brown pants, and slippers. Following the alarming discovery, the crew of the 'Rising Wind' promptly reversed the ship’s course in an effort to retrace their steps. In response to the situation, the JRSC Guam watchstanders rerouted the Air Station Barbers Point Hercules aircrew from a nearby maritime domain awareness flight and solicited assistance from the Air Force 36th Wing, who quickly deployed a Super Hercules aircrew from Anderson Air Force Base in Guam to join the search effort. Coast Guard personnel, along with the Air Force, have been conducting searches around the region, utilizing an HC-130 Hercules aircrew from Air Station Barbers Point and a C-130J Super Hercules aircrew from the Air Force. In parallel, JRSC Guam watchstanders are assessing the engagement of Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue System (AMVER) vessels to bolster the search efforts. Local partners and potential good Samaritans in the vicinity are also being contacted to assist in this critical operation. At the moment of the incident, the 'Rising Wind' was traveling from Nanao to Newcastle, Australia, with weather conditions reporting winds of 8 mph and seas as high as 13 feet.
