In a significant policy shift, the Obama administration announced on Friday the removal of sanctions against three shipping companies that had been imposed two years prior for aiding Iran in illicit oil shipments. The U.S. State Department stated that these sanctions are being lifted after the companies provided assurances to refrain from any future violations. The firms affected include Singapore's Tanker Pacific Management, Monaco's Société Anonyme Monégasque D'Administration Maritime Et Aérienne, and Liberia's Allvale Maritime Inc. These companies were implicated in a controversial 2010 deal that involved the provision of a tanker valued at approximately $8.65 million to Iran's state-owned shipping entity, in direct contravention of the Iran Sanctions Act. This early sanctioning action was noteworthy due to its direct impact on an Israeli company, which subsequently denied any involvement in the transaction. Following this response, the State Department revised the sanctions list to clarify that the Israeli firm was not associated with the tanker deal.
