Stevedoring Dispute Escalates at Paradip Port as Management Considers Open Tender
The ongoing stevedoring conflict at Paradip Port has intensified as the Paradip Port Trust (PPT) faces pushback from the Paradip Port Stevedores Association (PPSA) and other local groups. This disagreement erupted after PPT engaged Seaways Shipping & Logistics Pvt Ltd (SSLPL), an Andhra Pradesh-based logistics provider, to manage cargo operations from the JSPL vessel M V Harm. On Monday, PPT Chairman M T Krishna Babu issued a stern warning that anyone contravening port regulations would face significant consequences. He further indicated that the port might resort to an open tender process for stevedoring services if necessary. "The stevedoring job has been awarded to SSLPL, which is not part of the PPSA. We operate our major ports under a unified set of rules; the port’s operation is not contingent upon the regulations set by a singular stevedoring association. We are aware that if one player exits, others will step in. Here in Odisha, we have ample workforce to manage stevedoring tasks. Should it come to that, we are prepared to open the bidding process - the lowest bidder will be given the contract. We aim to ensure that our industrial partners do not face disruptions,' M T Krishna Babu stated while addressing the media on Monday.
