Emergency Heating System Failure on 'Rose III' During Severe Cold Snap
On January 22, 2023, the bulk carrier 'Rose III' experienced a critical failure of its heating system upon arriving at Nakhodka port, where temperatures plummeted to a chilling minus 26 degrees Celsius. When officials from the Far Eastern Regional Organization of the Russian Union of Seafarers (SUR) and port authorities conducted a board inspection, they discovered the internal temperature of the vessel had sunk to minus 5 degrees Celsius. The crew, comprising 24 sailors β including three Russians, such as Captain Sergei Volgin from Kaliningrad and senior mechanic Alexander Gonchar from Tuapse β alongside 21 Indian sailors, were facing dire conditions. Due to this emergency, the Nakhodka port administration detained the 'Rose III' vessel until the heating system could be restored. The Russian coastal services promptly mobilized to conduct emergency repairs on the vessel. Following successful work on the heating system, the 'Rose III' was released from detention, setting sail safely from Nakhodka on January 26, 2023, en route to Dandong with an estimated time of arrival (ETA) on January 30, 2023.
