On the evening of July 10, 2023, a critical medevac operation unfolded approximately 1,200 miles west of Costa Rica. Coordinated by the U.S. Coast Guard in collaboration with the Air National Guard’s 129th Rescue Wing and the Costa Rican Coast Guard, the operation was ignited by an urgent call regarding an injured crew member aboard the fishing vessel 'Victoria G'. At around 9:10 a.m. on that Friday, the Coast Guard’s Eleventh District Command Center received an alarming report from the Costa Rican Coast Guard about a mariner suffering a head injury while working on board. In response, watchstanders issued Automated Mutual Assistance Vessel Rescue (AMVER) alerts seeking immediate support from nearby vessels. Unfortunately, none within a 288-mile radius were able to assist. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the watchstanders swiftly contacted the 129th Rescue Wing based at Moffett Air National Guard Base in California. An HC-130J fixed-wing aircraft was launched, arriving on scene shortly thereafter. A team of four pararescuemen executed a daring nighttime parachute jump into the Eastern Pacific and successfully reached the 'Victoria G', where they stabilized the injured mariner. Meanwhile, the bulk carrier 'Royal Midori' answered the AMVER call and altered its course toward the fishing vessel to offer additional support. Ultimately, the pararescuemen and the injured mariner were transferred to the 'Royal Midori', which then expedited the transfer of the injured individual to a Costa Rican hospital for further medical care. This successful collaboration highlights the commitment and readiness of rescue teams operating in high-seas emergencies.
