UK Targets Russian Shadow Fleet with New Sanctions on 30 Tankers

Nov 26, 2024 09:31

On November 25, the UK government announced a major sanctions package aimed at 30 additional vessels, including the 'Python', that are linked to the notorious Russian Shadow Fleet, known for illicit oil transportation activities. This latest move is part of a broader strategy to disrupt Russia's oil revenues, which fuel its ongoing military actions in Ukraine. Over the past year, these tankers have collectively shipped more than $4.3 billion worth of oil and its derivatives. With this round of sanctions, the UK's total tally of sanctioned vessels from the Russian Shadow Fleet now stands at 73, making it the leading nation in addressing these maritime threats. In conjunction with the vessel sanctions, two Russian insurance firms, Alfastrakhovanie PLC and VSK, have also come under fire for their roles in facilitating these operations. The sanctions will prevent any collaboration with these insurers, effectively isolating them from international markets and enhancing the pressure on Russia’s maritime capabilities. The UK has urged other nations to join its initiative against the shadow fleet, and as of now, 46 countries have responded, demonstrating a growing international consensus against these deceptive and poorly maintained vessels that pose significant hazards on the high seas. The newly sanctioned vessels will face a ban from entering UK ports, and the UK authorities retain the power to direct their movements or detain them if necessary. Furthermore, these ships will not be eligible for registration in the UK Ship Register, and any existing registrations will be annulled. Crucially, these tankers will not benefit from price cap exemptions, even if involved in qualifying transactions under the Oil Price Cap Exception. This comprehensive approach aims not only to hamper Russia's oil trade but also to ensure safer shipping lanes for all maritime operators.
