Eurocargo Valencia Aids in Rescuing 22 Migrants Off Crete
On September 24, 2023, a successful search and rescue (SAR) operation was conducted 77 nautical miles west of Paleochora, Crete, saving 22 migrants, including 19 men and three boys. The Unified SAR Coordination Center received a distress signal at midday concerning a disabled vessel carrying an inadequate number of migrants. Responding to the emergency, five passing ships and one patrol boat joined the efforts. The Eurocargo Valencia, which was traveling from Valencia to Ashdod, played a crucial role by locating the struggling boat and safely retrieving all 22 individuals on board. Following their rescue, the migrants were transferred to a patrol boat and taken to Tigani port in Paleochora, where they received first aid and were placed in a quarantine area for their safety. Authorities at the Paleochora Port Station of the Central Port Authority of Chania are currently conducting a preliminary investigation into the incident.
