A distress signal was raised by the tanker 'WStar' on December 5, 2018, as the Indonesian Captain unexpectedly lost consciousness, exhibiting severe symptoms that included foaming at the mouth. This urgent call for medical assistance was made while the vessel was navigating in the East China Sea, north of Keelung and west of the Pengjia Islet. The 'WStar' had set sail from Keelung on the same day. In response, Taiwan's Air Rescue dispatched a helicopter to the scene. Unfortunately, during the challenging airlift operation, which was complicated by rough seas and strong winds, one or two members of the emergency rescue team sustained injuries, with one tragically passing away later in the hospital. Reports suggest that the Captain may have also succumbed, although this remains unverified. Following the incident, the 'WStar' altered its course and returned to Keelung.
