It is believed that the vessel is conducting its operations in the vicinity of Block 12 within Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), an area where Noble Energy has secured contracts to drill under the auspices of the Republic of Cyprus. Huseyin Benli, the director of Turkey’s Institute of Marine Science and Technology, which oversees the Piri Reis, noted that the ship had to temporarily dock in Famagusta due to adverse weather conditions but is prepared to resume exploration when the situation improves. He emphasized that the vessel will remain near Cyprus' shores due to obligations arising from agreements with the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Benli remarked, “If we are provided with new coordinates, we will continue our exploration; otherwise, we will transfer the operations to the vessel rented from Norway.” This refers to the Burgen Surveyor, a Norway-flagged ship operated by French company CGG Veritas, which is conducting underwater research off Cyprus' coast on behalf of Turkey.
