Emergency Response: 36 Migrants Rescued Off the Coast of Crete

On January 16, 2025, a swift response from the Greek Coast Guard led to the successful rescue of 36 migrants stranded at sea, approximately 50 nautical miles south of Crete. The alert was raised by the Joint Search and Rescue Coordination Center, prompting immediate action from the Port Authorities of Ierapetra, Agia Galini, Kala Limeni, Kokkinos Pyrgos, Chora Sfakion, and Paleochora. The vessel 'San Felix', which was en route from Marsaxlokk to Tanger Med, located the distressed migrants and promptly came to their aid. After their rescue, the individuals were transferred to a Coast Guard lifeboat and taken to the safety of Agia Galini's port. Subsequently, they were relocated to Rethymno and provided temporary shelter. Following the event, the Agia Galini Port Station launched a preliminary investigation to review the circumstances surrounding the incident.
