On February 23, 2019, the U.S. Coast Guard successfully conducted a medical evacuation of a crew member aboard the tanker 'San Fernando' near Southwest Pass, Louisiana. The mission was initiated at 3 a.m. after Sector New Orleans watchstanders received an alarming report regarding a man exhibiting symptoms consistent with appendicitis. Initial attempts to carry out the medevac were hampered by unfavorable weather conditions, prompting a delay. However, dedicated personnel at Sector New Orleans redirected an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans to the scene at 11:30 a.m. The helicopter reached the vessel by noon, where the aircrew executed a hoist operation and safely transported the patient to University Hospital. Fortunately, the man was reported in stable condition following the critical intervention.
