FRS Shipping Company to Submit Salvage Plan for 'San Gwann' by September 1

Aug 31, 2021 10:38

In a recent development, the FRS shipping company has been tasked with delivering a comprehensive salvage plan for the stranded ferry 'San Gwann' by September 1. Efforts to recover the vessel have been concentrated on the extraction of 15 tons of fuel from its tanks during the period of August 30 to 31. The ferry is currently lodged on rocks, and successful retrieval operations depend on favorable weather conditions and adequate resources for towing. Ronny Moriana, FRS’s General Director, emphasized that this incident marks the first of its kind in the company's distinguished 150-plus years of operation, assuring that they are committed to resuming ferry services promptly. FRS has also initiated an internal investigation into the incident, with the captain, who has been part of the company for a decade, under scrutiny. Meanwhile, President Francina Armengol has arrived in Ibiza to assess the situation firsthand and engage with representatives from both the shipping company and the Balearic Port Authority. She commended the effective coordination among all parties involved, affirming that emergency protocols were adequately followed. Special attention is being given to the wellbeing of those affected, including a 10-year-old boy currently receiving treatment in the pediatric intensive care unit at Son Espases.

Accident Involving FRS Ferry 'San Gwann' Leaves 16 Injured Near Ibiza

Aug 30, 2021 13:33

On the evening of August 28, 2021, the ferry 'San Gwann', which operates between Ibiza and Formentera, ran aground on the rocky North islet of Es Malvins while leaving the port of Vila. The incident resulted in water ingress on the vessel, although it was confirmed that the ferry was not at risk of sinking. At the time of the collision, there were 35 passengers aboard, alongside 12 crew members. Tragically, a ten-year-old boy sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Mallorca for urgent medical care. Additionally, 15 other individuals reported minor injuries from the accident. Salvamento Marítimo promptly initiated a search and rescue operation, deploying several assets including the SAR vessels 'Salvamar Acrux', 'Salvamar Guardamar', and 'Salvamar Polimnia', as well as a Helimer helicopter and the port pilot boat from Ibiza. The Castaví Jet from 'Trasmapi', along with specialized teams like GEAS and Servisub, also participated in the rescue efforts. The SAMU 061 ambulance team successfully boarded the stranded ship via a lifeboat, while other emergency responders remained at the port of Ibiza, ready for the arrival of the evacuated passengers. The injured were subsequently transported by helicopter to Can Misses Hospital in Ibiza; among them were two individuals with serious injuries and seven with less severe conditions. The remaining passengers were ferried back to the port using SAR boats. Upon arrival, ten slightly injured individuals were taken to Can Misses Hospital, while six were admitted to the Nuestra Señora del Rosario Clinic. The ten-year-old boy was treated at Son Espases, the primary referral hospital on the island. Experts assessing the 'San Gwann' after the crash noted extensive damage, leading to doubts about whether the vessel would be able to resume operations between the Pitiusas islands this season. As of August 29, the ferry remained stranded at coordinates 38° 53.33' N 001° 26.32' E, with the 'Salvamar Acrux' standing by. Fortunately, no risk of fuel spillage was detected, as the incident impacted the bow, while fuel tanks are situated at the stern. FRS, the ferry's operator, expressed gratitude for the collaboration of Salvamento Marítimo and all agencies involved in the rescue and evacuation process. The company is currently evaluating the damage and plans to submit a proposal to refloat the vessel to the Harbour Master's Office. The Balearic Minister of Transport visited the site on August 29 to discuss further actions regarding the incident. Additionally, the President of the Balearic Government, Francina Armengol, plans to travel to Ibiza on August 30 for a critical meeting concerning the situation of the 'San Gwann'. This meeting will include several officials, including Vicent Marí, President of the Consell de Ibiza, Francesc Antich from the Balearic Port Authority, members of the Maritime Captaincy, as well as representatives from Maritime Rescue and FRS. An investigation into the causes of the accident and potential liabilities has been announced by the Maritime Captaincy.
