On December 3, 2024, the United States unveiled a comprehensive sanctions package targeting 35 entities and vessels implicated in the transportation of Iranian oil and petroleum products to international markets. This strategic action follows Iran's aggressive military actions against Israel on October 1 and recent announcements related to nuclear program escalations. The primary objective of these sanctions is to disrupt funding for Iran's nuclear initiatives, drone and missile advancements, and its support for terrorist proxies by cutting off vital revenue streams from oil sales. Among the affected are 18 tankers, accused of shipping vast quantities of Iranian oil—amounting to tens of millions of barrels. The sanctions also extend to various entities that operate, manage, and facilitate the sale of these vessels. Notably, the tankers 'Rioo Napo' and 'Lara II' have been flagged due to their association with Vision Ship Management LLP, an India-based firm that has been sanctioned in tandem. The 'Rioo Napo' has previously transported Iranian Naphta to the UAE, highlighting its role in the illicit trade. Additionally, the 'Tonil' tanker has garnered attention for circumventing prior sanctions while transporting significant volumes of Iranian oil. This vessel is owned and managed by the sanctioned Ukrainian Lightship Management Ltd., with further links to Indian Tightship Shipping Management (OPC) Private Ltd., another sanctioned entity implicated in its operations. This latest round of sanctions is part of the continuing effort to impede Iran's capacity to fund its controversial activities through oil exports.
