Emergency Evacuation of Tankers in La Coruña Amid Severe Weather Conditions
In a dramatic turn of events on November 8, 2017, the vessels 'Eagle Turin' and 'Sichem Hawk' were forced to abandon their positions at the Repsol oil terminal in La Coruña due to rapidly deteriorating weather conditions. As violent winds and turbulent waves battered the port, the tankers experienced a series of malfunctioning mooring lines. The 'Eagle Turin,' which was in the process of discharging an impressive 83,000 tons of crude oil, was the first to set sail under these urgent circumstances. Following closely was the 'Sichem Hawk,' which had been engaged in loading diesel oil. Once they left the port, the 'Eagle Turin' maneuvered offshore while the 'Sichem Hawk' sought refuge in the Ria de Bentranzos Bay to the north of La Coruña, where it anchored and waited for the weather to improve safely.
Distressed Yacht 'Orinoco Flo' Rescued with Help from Tanker 'Eagle Turin'
On June 12, 2012, the dismasted yacht 'Orinoco Flo' was discovered off the stunning Cornish Coast by a helicopter from RNAS Culdrose. The vessel, which raised concerns after its owner contacted Falmouth Coastguard on May 27 regarding its overdue status, had struggled since losing its mast. The limited range of its VHF radio complicated communications, leaving the yacht in a precarious situation. The last vessel to make contact was the passing tanker 'Eagle Turin', which reached out on June 2, offering food supplies to the beleaguered yacht. Although the skipper initially declined assistance to continue on a jury-rigged sail, further intervention from Falmouth Coastguard initiated a successful rescue effort. The Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopter from RNAS Culdrose reestablished contact, ultimately persuading the skipper to accept a tow from the St. Mary's RNLI lifeboat. In the evening of June 12, after approximately 100 miles of towing, the St. Mary's lifeboat triumphantly brought 'Orinoco Flo' alongside the quay in Hugh Town, St. Mary's, at 7 a.m., concluding a dramatic chapter at sea.
