The tanker 'Spartan' recently discharged a significant cargo of one million barrels of Russian crude at Mundra port on September 14, 2025. After completing the discharge, the vessel set sail again on September 16, continuing its journey towards Suez, where it arrived on September 25. In an intriguing turn of events, another vessel, the 'Noble Walker' (IMO: 9292981), which was also transporting Russian oil, was forced to alter its course. Initially en route to Mundra, the 'Noble Walker' changed its destination to Vadinar port after Adani Group enforced a ban on ships blacklisted due to sanctions at its Mundra facilities on September 12. This ship, carrying approximately one million barrels of Russian crude for HPCL Mittal Energy Ltd, had been on track for Mundra until the implementation of the ban. The 'Noble Walker' has been officially blacklisted by the European Union and the United Kingdom for violating sanctions related to the transportation of Russian oil and is operated by Mancera Shipping. Following the diversion, the 'Noble Walker' arrived at Vadinar on September 23 and continued towards the Gulf of Kutch on September 24, with an expected arrival at Suez by October 7. Indian refiners, including HMEL and Indian Oil Corp, routinely utilize Mundra for oil imports, notably from Russia.

On December 16, 2024, the European Union unveiled its latest sanctions package during a Foreign Affairs Council meeting, which includes the addition of 52 vessels to its sanctions list, notably the ship 'Saturn'. These vessels have been identified by the EU as contributors to Russia's military activities, notably through actions that undermine the oil price cap put in place by Western nations, involvement in arms supply, and the transport of appropriated grain. This recent set of sanctions elevates the total number of shipping entities under EU sanctions to 79, predominantly comprising those engaged in the transport of Russian oil and military supplies. Additionally, the sanctions package extends its reach to include 54 individuals and 30 organizations that are seen as complicit in bolstering Russia's ongoing war efforts. This group also encompasses actors from China and North Korea who are reportedly supplying Russia with dual-use materials essential for military operations. Among those sanctioned are two high-ranking officials from North Korea and seven individuals and companies from China. The primary objective of these sanctions is to escalate Russia’s operational costs by prohibiting access to EU ports and limiting their availability to maritime services, thereby intensifying pressure on the Russian war effort.
