Major Cocaine Seizure in Zeebrugge After Midnight Drug Operation

Jun 25, 2025 11:00

On June 24, 2025, customs authorities made a startling discovery aboard the 'Scot Bremen' in Zeebrugge, uncovering hundreds of kilos of cocaine following a dramatic nighttime operation at the Blankenberge marina. This operation had commenced just days earlier, on the night of June 22, when police apprehended eight suspects attempting to launch a boat under the cover of darkness. Preliminary estimates peg the total weight of the seized drugs at over half a ton, suggesting that the group may have intended to retrieve the narcotics from the sea. At the time, the 'Scot Bremen,' which was making its journey from Pecem to the port of Ghent, had to alter its route due to inclement weather conditions and the necessity of remaining offshore until June 23. The tanker finally docked at Quay 205 of the Westerhoofd terminal on June 24, where customs officials commenced their search. The vessel had left Pecem at the end of May and made a brief stop in Las Palmas (Gran Canaria) on June 14, adding further context to the ongoing investigation. As of June 26, the 'Scot Bremen' remained halted in Zeebrugge, and further inquiries were underway. It remains unclear whether additional arrests or detentions will stem from this high-profile drug bust, highlighting the complexities of maritime crime and enforcement.

Tragic Medevac at Sea: Crew Member of Scot Bremen Passes Away

May 15, 2016 13:16

On May 14, 2016, a tragic incident unfolded aboard the chemical tanker "Scot Bremen" shortly after its departure from the port of Terneuzen. A crew member collapsed and lost consciousness while the vessel was navigating the Westerscheldt en route from Zelzate to Brazil. As soon as the situation was recognized, the tanker anchored in Flushing to facilitate a swift medical response. The Dutch Coastguard promptly alerted the KNRM Breskens lifeboat and the Belgian Air Force’s NH90 Caïman helicopter to assist with the emergency medevac. The lifeboat "Zeemanshoop" reached the scene within just 15 minutes. Two trained crew members equipped with oxygen and an AED worked quickly to assist the unconscious sailor, who was suffering from chest pain. After treatment and stabilization, the crew member was carefully moved to the port side and prepared for transport to the hospital. The Caïman helicopter arrived shortly thereafter, delivering medical personnel and supplies. The patient was hoisted aboard on a stretcher and swiftly transported to Terneuzen Hospital. Despite the best efforts of the medical teams, the crew member was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital. Following this tragic event, the "Scot Bremen" remained anchored off Flushing for a period of investigation before continuing its voyage to Mucuripe.
