Paraffin Wax Spill Incident In Hamburg Involves Wappen von Dresden
On December 5, 2012, a significant pollution incident unfolded in the port of Hamburg involving the tanker 'Wappen von Dresden'. While docked at the Arningkai, the vessel was in the process of unloading 9,224 tons of paraffin wax when the situation escalated. Throughout the unloading operation, the tank lids remained open, and during the transfer of the third tank's contents, an unintended release occurred. An unspecified volume of paraffin wax spilled onto the deck, creating a contaminated area spanning approximately 50 square meters. In various locations, the wax accumulation reached heights of up to 20 centimeters and partially spilled into the surrounding waters. Fortunately, the solid nature of the wax allowed for prompt cleanup efforts both on the deck and in the water. The local water police swiftly initiated an investigation into the incident. As a consequence of the spill, the responsible parties were required to secure a safety deposit of 56,650 Euros.
