Ferry 'Sea Cargo Express' Grounded in Surnadal Due to Gusty Winds
On June 28, 2018, the ferry 'Sea Cargo Express,' which had departed from Trondheim at 5:35 a.m., found itself in a precarious situation as strong winds unexpectedly struck during a mooring maneuver. The vessel was blown aground in Røtet while approaching Surnadal later that afternoon, ending up stuck in the clay seabed at the coordinates 62° 59.29' N 008° 38.99' E, just off the port. Despite the crew's best efforts to regain control, they were unable to maneuver the ferry in time to prevent grounding. Emergency assistance was called in, with tugboats dispatched from Kristiansund to help with the situation. Fortunately, there was no risk of any leakage from the ferry. By 8 p.m., the lifeboat 'Erik Bye' arrived on site but had to wait for the tide to rise before conducting a rescue operation. Ultimately, the 'Sea Cargo Express' was successfully refloated at 3:20 a.m. the following day and proceeded to Kristiansund under its own power, arriving at the port at approximately 7:30 a.m. on June 29. Cargo Incident at Flatholmen: Emergency Response Activated
On March 6, 2013, emergency response teams in Ålesund sprang into action at approximately 7:55 a.m. after the 'Sea-Cargo Express,' a vessel carrying hazardous materials, sought aid following a significant cargo shift while navigating past Stad. The ship successfully docked in Ålesund harbor by 8:40 a.m. with a crew comprising 14 members. Reports revealed that around 17,000 liters of toxic and flammable liquid had leaked from the vessel's hold. The spilled substances included a corrosive liquid along with another that presented both flammable and toxic hazards. Fortunately, the leak was contained within the cargo area, and although four individuals were exposed to the hazardous materials, there were no reported injuries. The local fire department was promptly engaged to assist with the evacuation of the hazardous cargo. Complications arose as the duty officer had to facilitate access to the port by opening the gate, causing several fire engines, ambulances, and police units to queue outside the perimeter without immediate access to the ship. In an effort to expedite assistance, authorities considered cutting the fence for quicker entry.
