Walvis Bay Seizes 'Sea Challenger' for Illegal Waste Dumping
On February 4, 2016, authorities at Walvis Bay took action against the tanker 'Sea Challenger,' which was detained following an investigation into illegal waste disposal. Officials discovered plastic bottles bearing the vessel’s labels in nearby recreational areas, linking the waste directly to the tanker. At the time of the discovery, 'Sea Challenger' had already completed its offloading and departed the port, prompting authorities to summon the crew back for questioning. Although the crew denied any wrongdoing regarding the waste dumping, negotiations were taking place between Namibian officials and Sturrock Grindrod, the ship's managing agent. Should the crew be found guilty of the charges, they face potential fines ranging from 12,900 Namibian dollars (approximately 786 U.S. dollars) to 130,000 Namibian dollars (around 8,176 U.S. dollars).
