Following these actions, it was reported that the skiff eventually retreated and ceased its approach.

Sea Emperor Departs for Lagos After Crew's Hardship

Feb 08, 2017 11:43

The seafaring charity, Apostleship of the Sea, has shed light on the distressing situation faced by the crew of the 'Sea Emperor.' This tanker, which had been anchored in Hampshire, suffered from severe crew welfare issues, with the team lacking adequate warm clothing and remaining unpaid for a total of three months. Detained by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) upon its arrival at Fawley refinery on January 28, 2017, the ship was found deficient in necessary equipment and cleaning supplies. Peter Morgan, who serves as the assistant port chaplain for southern ports, reached out to the crew after they raised their concerns through the International Transport Workers’ Federation. Initially hesitant to speak due to anxiety around the marine superintendent, the crew's spirits were lifted when Morgan returned the following day. He brought essential items such as fresh clothing, soap, cleaning products, and SIM cards, allowing them to reconnect with their families back in the Philippines. Unfortunately, the 'Sea Emperor' was already at an anchorage by the time he arrived. In a further effort to support the crew, Morgan accompanied a marine police unit to deliver much-needed supplies. Upon their visit, the crew appeared more cheerful and relieved, sharing the good news that they had finally received their overdue wages and necessary cleaning products had also been loaded onto the tanker. Recently, the 'Sea Emperor' became the focus of a tense situation near the Isle of Wight when reports emerged of a fire on board. However, the Cowes RNLI lifeboat along with Calshot’s two inshore lifeboats quickly verified that this was a false alarm caused by the vessel's bright deck lights, as it remained anchored off the coast. The tanker was cleared to depart Fawley on January 29 and is now making its way to Lagos, with an expected arrival date of February 18. Upon its docking, Father Gabriel Feyisetan, the charity's port chaplain in Lagos, is set to visit the crew to provide support. Additionally, Apostleship of the Sea will engage with the men's families in Manila to offer any further assistance they may require.
