Recovery of Crew Member's Body Amid Ongoing Search for Five Missing Indians
On October 20, authorities successfully recovered the body of Sreerag Radhakrishnan, a resident of Thevalakkara, off the coast of Beira. Sreerag, who had been employed with Scorpio Marine, a company located in Mozambique, had dedicated four years to his maritime career. Indrajith, another crew member from Piravom, Ernakulam, departed for Mozambique on October 13. The search efforts continue for five Indian nationals who remain unaccounted for, including Sreerag and Indrajith, aged 22. Earlier reports confirmed the tragic passing of three Indian crew members.
Search Intensifies for Seven Missing Crew Members After Boat Capsizes Near 'Sea Quest'
On October 16, 2025, a tragic maritime incident unfolded at Beira's outer anchorage when a service launch capsized alongside the tanker 'Sea Quest'. The unfortunate event has left seven individuals missing, including five crew members scheduled to board the 'Sea Quest'. The service boat, operated by Scorpio Marine Management India Pvt. Ltd. (RPSL-MUM-165), was transporting a total of 21 people, with 14 designated as new crew members for the tanker awaiting its turn to berth. The incident occurred during a transfer operation on the starboard side of the tanker. As the launch was facilitating the onboarding of twelve Indian crew members, it unexpectedly capsized, triggering immediate rescue efforts. Fourteen individuals were successfully rescued by the tanker crew and nearby vessels, but five crew members, one technician, and another service boat crew member remain unaccounted for. Among the 12 Indian seafarers aboard, five were rescued safely, while two were found unresponsive and are currently undergoing medical treatment. The search and rescue operations are being coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), with nearby ships joining the efforts. As of October 17, the tanker is anchored at coordinates 19Β° 55' N 035Β° 09' E. The rescued individuals include Second Officer Ankit Kumar, Third Officer Sreerag Thayyil Purappodi, Pumpman Sunilkumar Tandel, Oiler Azim Mukadam, and Able Seaman Narendra Behara. Tragically, Ordinary Seaman Ruban Rayar and Ordinary Seaman Mohan Singh Shekhawat are currently unresponsive but receiving critical medical attention. The five missing personnel are Electro-Technical Officer Sreerag Radhakrishnan, Bosun Tharakeswara Rao, Able Seamen Saileshkumar Solanki and Mubeen Koruhajige Athirige, and Chief Cook Nandan Singh. In response to this distressing situation, Director General of Shipping Shyam Jagannathan has formally requested the Marshall Islands Maritime Administration to undertake a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the capsizing and to expedite their findings to Indian authorities. Scorpio Ship Management has expressed its commitment to cooperating with all investigations and maintaining contact with the families of the missing crew members.
