Witherby Group, a prominent name in nautical publications and training, is set to enhance its coastal survey operations with the acquisition of the 'Sea Ranger'. This former salvage tug will be instrumental in conducting surveys in the vital Sunda and Lombok Straits under a contract with the Indonesian government. Once known as the 'Lone Ranger', the 'Sea Ranger' previously served as the inaugural research vessel for the Schmidt Oceanographic Research Institute and was constructed as one of the world’s largest ocean-going salvage tugs. This acquisition marks a significant upgrade for Witherby, as the 'Sea Ranger' will take over from the 'Astra', a smaller research vessel that recently made history in 2022 by becoming the first motor-powered vessel under 24 meters to circumnavigate the globe within five months.
